HOW IT ALL STARTED…
From Father & Son to 25 Years Later…
MJT Aged Guitars started as an idea over 25 years ago in a man’s garage in the Central Coast of California. That man was Mark Jenny. His idea was to be able to have his own vintage feeling and looking guitar, without paying the thousands of dollars it would cost to have an original. Mark started by simply meeting an internal desire for authenticity and discovered a growing community of like-minded people along the way. Never truly intending to sell his work, he took to newly developed internet forums to share it. His focus was on the artistry of handmade, handcrafted quality guitar finishes for a passionate group of lovers of a bygone era. Soon, fans of his guitars began asking him to make them one of their own, and the rest is history. But Mark needed someone to organize this idea so that it could be available to as many players as possible. Shortly after he started, his son Matt Jenny came alongside him and MJT Aged Guitars was born.
Since that time, many members of the Jenny family and close friends have helped build MJT into what it is today. A family-owned and operated company that can now offer that same level of vintage authenticity, handcrafted quality, and individual care to every single guitar player out there. After decades of experience, MJT Aged Guitars is the leader in recreating the most authentic vintage guitar finishes in the world.
What is MJT?
If you’re here we're assuming that you're a fan of vintage guitars and like the look and feel of a well-played instrument. That you think the best environment for you to connect with a guitar is for it to have the original finish on it. And you have a love and respect for the history and detail of how these mid-century beauties were made. However, with the rising costs of vintage guitars, it’s nearly impossible for you to get your hands on one. This is where MJT Aged Guitars comes in. Over the years, we have replicated the methods and look of the vintage guitars of the 50’s & 60’s, in the most authentic ways. And that is only possible, with our signature Aging and Nitrocellulose Lacquer.
Nitrocellulose is the most abundant organic polymer on earth. It is dissolved in a solvent, Lacquer. This combination was developed, then adapted for guitars in the early 1900’s for its ability to protect the wood, without inhibiting resonance and the ability for the “instrument to breathe”. As well as its depth of beauty and luster. Most guitar companies have modernized, adding plasticizers or switching to Synthetic Polyurethane in order to achieve a quicker and easier process. Meanwhile the player endures the high cost of a lower functioning instrument that just doesn’t feel as good to play. MJT Aged Guitars is one of the last places in the world where you can still find a 100% Nitrocellulose Lacquer Guitar that can Age with you.
Our signature Aging is also unique to MJT. One of the benefits of “Nitro” is that it is affected by natural elements. Temperature, moisture and light exposure all have an effect on the look and feel of the instrument. This is what gives a guitar character and a truly well-played feel. The effects of these elements can be enjoyed naturally over time as you develop a relationship with your guitar. Or they can be manipulated to create something entirely unique and beautiful right out of the box! We know that everyone has different tastes (especially musicians) and MJT specializes in providing the full spectrum of Clean to Heavily Aged Guitars as a result. Our Aging process is designed to provide the most authentically vintage looking guitar of 50+ years in a matter of weeks.
There is so much that goes into what we do, and we always prefer to make a personal, one-on-one connection with everyone in our community.
